In "Oliver Twist" by Charles Dickens, the main conflicts all revolve around the classic story of Good vs. Evil. The prominent conflict is, where should Oliver be placed in society? Although he is but young and innocent, Oliver is almost "tested" by a higher force as to whether he belongs with the cruel or the kind. The cruel being Fagin and his pickpocket gang, whilst the kind being the open arms of both Mr. Brownlow and Rose Maylie. Oliver finds himself not quite knowing where he should fit, and even when he tries to decide, destiny pushs him on his way. It takes a lot of soul for someone so small to withstand all the change and encounters that Oliver faces. I think that really shows that he has the courage plus the character to do and be what ever he dreams of. The question remains, will the good-hearted truly prevail in society or will dark forces cause them to surrender to a pitiful life?
This does remind me of life and how everyone is faced with choices but some are simply made for us through fate. We may choose with our mind to do one thing, but end up doing something completely different. There must be something guiding our paths and placing each one of us where we truely belong. Im not sure what it is, but I believe its there.
I have always wanted to read "Oliver Twist" and the conflict you wrote about makes the book even more appealing. I believe in destiny and that everything happens for a reason. It is interesting we are destined to do certain things and that our paths have already been paved. Great post!
ReplyDeleteYour post was a very interesting read Hannah!
ReplyDeleteThe tug-o-war between the two forces of "Good vs. Evil" and how they fight for Oliver is something I look forward to reading the resolve. Will he succumb to the darker forces or will he be able to remain innocent?
Concerning the idea of fate, I think it would be really nice if there was something guiding and placing us in life's true callings. However, I believe we often stray paths or choose to defy it for our own selfish reasons. Additionally, i believe that not believing in fate gives us a reason to strive for success in our lives.
Nice reflective post Hannah!
Hannah! :)
ReplyDeleteThis post was very well written. I especially like your reflection because you really got me thinking if fate really exists. Personally, though I believe in fate and destiny with the idea of love, I've always believed that the choices we make as an individual is what outlines the events that will happen in our life. But now that you mention that sometimes we make our own choices but for some reason, end up doing something completely different really boggles my mind. I am starting to agree with you that everyone might actually have their lives somewhat paved out.
Overall, great post!
Throughout the whole time I was reading this I thought could just imagine a guy with two little figures on his shoulder. One of which is a miniature version of the devil and on the other is an angel. Just like those movies. Back to the post, it was very descriptive and really makes me want to read the book. Good Job Hannah!
ReplyDeleteHannah my dear, I just enjoy reading your posts about this novel. I recently saw this movie the other day! I'll have to agree with Kitty Ku on her opinion and as well with yours. Though fate, an idea that some choose to believe in, is thought to guide one to a designated point in their life, it may only be up to Oliver to make his decisions that's best for him based on his situation at the time being.
ReplyDeleteHEY THERE
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of good vs evil and how Oliver has to make his decisions wisely. A quote from the trilogy of "The Matrix", "The problem is choice." Yes, the ability to choose what we do gives us control over our lives. Along with that, choice also tears us apart. When you are forced to make an impossible decision, what can you do? Other than to force yourself to choose with immense pain? For example, you, your mother, and your lover all instantaneously trip and fall off a cliff. You miraculously find a parachute that can only support yourself and one other. You can either save your mom, who has brought you up with loving hands, or your lover, who you have loved for a very long time. Who do you choose?
